8 Best Olive Oil Consumer Reports of 2022 – Review and Buying Guide

Over the course of two weeks, we put more than a hundred different olive oils through their paces in an attempt to determine which were the finest. A positive development? In every price range, we were able to find a wide variety of excellent olive oils. Worse yet? Bottles we didn’t care for at all were also discovered.

Even the wines we liked at first taste weren’t as lively when we sampled them again a week later, which was extremely disappointing. That’s why it’s important to stock up on freshly pressed, extra-virgin olive oil from the latest harvest, keep it in an airtight container, and use it liberally morning, noon, and night. Finish it up while the memory is still fresh!

Our Test Kitchen editors use olive oil for everything from sautéing to baking to salad dressing to finishing with a drizzle. If you’re that kind of chef, you’ll love the Monini GranFruttato Extra-Virgin Olive Oil that came out on top in our comparison.

Extra virgin olive oil from California Olive Ranch is described as “freshly pressed juice” on the company’s website. This cold-pressed olive oil is prepared by manually crushing fresh olives, as opposed to the lighter and refined oils that are made by exposing the oil to high heat.

The “Everyday” mix incorporates multiple olive varieties to produce an oil with a wide range of flavors, including herbal, fruity, and grassy undertones. Many consumers can attest to the fact that it is perfect for everyday uses including sautéing, baking, roasting, and even drizzling over salads, as the name of the product suggests. The “Mild” blend offers a less robust, buttery flavor for those who prefer something more subtle.

The oils produced by California Olive Ranch have all been tested and verified as extra virgin by an independent laboratory. The extra virgin olive oil has the mark of approval from the Olive Oil Commission of California; in addition, it has been certified as kosher and non-GMO (or OOCC). Some buyers have complained that a bottle of this oil is more expensive than other supermarket brands, but others have defended its higher price by praising its superior flavor and quality.

The greatest olive oil for dipping because of this quality. Picual olives from Andalucia, Spain, are picked at the beginning of the season and cold-pressed the same day to produce La Tourangelle’s extra virgin olive oil.

This method yields oil with a flavor profile that includes notes of almond, olive leaf, and recently mown grass, among others. Customers appreciate that the taste isn’t too strong, however others have complained that the bottle is poorly designed, resulting in oil dripping out.

The La Tourangelle olive oil is BPA-free and comes in a tin that has been certified as organic and non-GMO.

Buying Guide: What to Consider When Choosing Olive Oil

a) Grade

Olive oil comes in three consumable forms: extra virgin, virgin, and refined. 9 The acidity level of extra virgin olive oil should be less than 0.8%, while that of virgin olive oil should be less than 2%. The acidity of refined olive oils is less than 0.3%, and these oils are nearly clear, odorless, and flavorless despite their low acidity.

Extra virgin olive oils are more expensive than refined oils, but they are widely regarded as the superior choice when it comes to flavor.

b) Processing

Oils can be extracted using a wide variety of methods. In contrast to refined oils, which may be subjected to heat or chemical solvents, the only way to produce extra virgin olive oil is through mechanical or hand-pressing. For olive oil production, the gold standard is cold pressing, a mechanical method that is akin to chewing in that a machine masticates the olives until oil is produced.

c) Bottle Color

Olive oils, particularly extra virgin and virgin varieties, are photosensitive. Fats and oils can oxidize and spoil when exposed to light. 8 Find an olive oil that has been stored in a dark bottle to prevent oxidation. The olive oil’s hue shouldn’t be seen through the bottle. By doing so, we may rest assured that the oil will be safe.

i) How is olive oil made?

Crushing the olives and then pressing them mechanically yields olive oil. Harvested olives are taken to a processing facility where the fruit is cleaned and the leaves and stems are removed. After being separated, the fruit is washed and crushed into a paste, typically using stainless steel rollers. After being mixed for up to forty minutes, the paste is put into a centrifuge to extract the oil without damaging the solid components. The method is quite similar to that used to produce cold-pressed juice (and yes, olives are a fruit).

At this point, the oil can be refined or bleached, but it is no longer extra virgin olive oil if it has been subjected to heat or chemicals.

ii) Does olive oil go bad?

There is a wide range in the shelf life of olive oil, from four months to two years.

10 When compared to virgin and refined oils, the shelf life of extra virgin oils is significantly shorter. Olive oil in a clear bottle or exposed to strong light will degrade more quickly.

iii) Can you fry with olive oil?

Despite popular belief, olive oil can be used for frying and other culinary purposes, if the oil is heated to the proper temperature. Smoke point, or the temperature at which olive oil begins to burn and produce smoke, ranges from 350°F to 410°F.  Olive oil can be used for frying as long as the temperature doesn’t exceed 375 degrees Fahrenheit (350 degrees Celsius).

iv) Can you substitute olive oil for vegetable oil?

While olive oil can be used in place of vegetable oil in most recipes, you may not want to. Extra virgin olive oil has a robust flavor that stands in stark contrast to the blandness of most vegetable oils. This flavor goes well with a wide variety of savory dishes, but it can be too strong for sweet baked products like cakes and brownies.

v) What makes olive oil extra virgin?

Olive oil of the finest grade is extra virgin olive oil, which is unrefined. The acidity level of extra virgin olive oil can’t be higher than 0.8%. Extra virgin indicates it hasn’t been processed with any chemicals or high temperatures, so it tastes and smells fresh. Extra virgin olive oil is always cold-pressed or pressed mechanically.
