10 Best Robot Vacuum Consumer Reports 2022 – Reviews By An Expert!

Robot vacuum cleaners are a convenient alternative to manual sweeping and vacuuming if you find yourself too busy to keep your home tidy. They can easily sneak underneath couches and tables because they utilize technology like lasers and cameras to navigate the environment and avoid obstacles. Some even include built-in mechanisms that eliminate the need for manual emptying of the dirt bin. Many of these vacuums have smart pathing technology to clean more efficiently, but they still aren’t as adept at cleaning carpet as conventional upright vacuums. You can limit its access to select places or schedule its cleanings with the help of an accompanying app and/or remote control.

The Roomba s9+ from iRobot is the greatest robot vacuum overall since it is among the most intelligent and comprehensive models we’ve examined. After just a few excursions, because to its superior mapping capabilities, it can record and retain a blueprint of your home’s many floors. You can then choose individual rooms and instruct the S9+ to clean those rooms on particular days. Given that this is an obviously noisy robot vacuum, especially on hardwood floors, we advise scheduling it for when you’re not home.

However, it is a capable vacuum on both carpet and hard surfaces, with an average pick up score of about 97. Contrary to what is typically the case, we found that it is more effective than Cheerios at picking up pet hair and cat litter. It is therefore advantageous for smaller trash.

A self-emptying charging base is also included with the Roomba s9+; while replacement bags are required, you will only need to empty the container once every 30 days, which will save you a lot of time compared to emptying the onboard trash.

If you want to spend even more money, the Samsung Galaxy S9+ can communicate with the Braava Jet M6 Robot Mop ($499) from the same manufacturer and instruct it to begin cleaning your floors when the S9+ has finished vacuuming. That’s really cool. This robot vacuum is expensive overall, but there isn’t much opportunity for improvement.

  • Attractive, premium design
  • Mapping was quick and easy
  • Easy-to-use mapping controls in app

The greatest robot vacuum you can get for under $200 is the iLife V3s Pro. The V3s Pro consistently outperformed rival robot vacuums that cost three times as much money, despite its inexpensive price. The best robot vacuum for pet hair, it successfully removed almost all of Fido’s fur in our lab tests. It also performed well in our at-home tests. With 64.1dB, it had a noise level that was about average when compared to the other robot vacuums put to the test.

However, there are several restrictions when buying a robot vacuum thus inexpensively. First off, the iLife V3s Pro is sluggish; some users only needed less than 30 minutes to clean our test environment, while others needed more than 90 minutes on average. Additionally, you must use the provided remote control to operate it; Alexa or Google Assistant cannot be used to activate it or set up cleaning schedules. It also cannot be operated from a smartphone. However, it excels in picking up debris, which is the one thing it must do well. Its drawbacks are concessions we’re willing to accept for this pricing. It is also one of the best inexpensive robot vacuums because of this.

  • Excellent pet-hair-cleaning performance
  • Fantastic hardwood performance
  • Inexpensive

The majority of the robot vacuum/robot mop hybrids we’ve examined up until the Roborock S7 were adequate but not exceptional at either duty. The S7 is the first of its kind that we would feel comfortable leaving alone to vacuum and mop. Because the S7 is so smart, it can detect when it’s operating on a rug and raise the mopping pad to protect your carpet.

The S7 had an average pick-up score of 93 and performed quickly and thoroughly. It wasn’t the best at removing pet hair, but it did well in other areas. It’s at its best on hard floors, but it still does a respectable job (an average of above 90) on carpet. It contains several excellent touches like a multi-floor map, restricted areas, and a timetable. The Roborock S7 is an excellent choice if you need a robot vacuum that can also wash your floors.

  • Accurate carpet detection
  • Fast mapping
  • Auto-raising mop works well

  • Dividing spaces in app can be glitchy
  • Mop pad can catch on area rugs

  • MORE THOUGHTFUL THAN YOU THOUGHT - The Roomba j7+ takes vacuuming off your mind...

The latest Roomba from iRobot, the j7+, is one of the best on the market thanks to its innovative obstacle detection and avoidance system. Through this, it is able to identify commonplace items like cables and socks and avoid colliding with them. The ability of the bot to avoid pet poop is the key benefit of this function. iRobot is so sure that the Roomba j7+ is smart that they are replacing any j7+ that can’t detect and avoid solid pet waste under the Pet Owner Official Promise (P.O.O.P). One of the smartest robot vacuum cleaners we’ve used so far because it’s always improving with use. Because of this, it was named the best robot vacuum of 2022 by Tom’s Guide.

The cleaning base included with the j7+ is excellent. It is more compact than other bases while yet holding enough garbage for 60 days. Cereal and kitty litter were two examples of the larger material that this robot vacuum did a good job of gathering (98.33 and 94.6%, respectively). Though we’ve seen higher marks, this was still one of the finest results we’ve seen on pet hair. If your pet has accidents frequently, and you want to minimize the ensuing mess, this is a fantastic purchase.

  • Excellent obstacle avoidance
  • Learns from cleaning data
  • Easy to create no-go zones
  • Redesigned Clean Base is less obtrusive

For its superior performance on hard surfaces, Wyze’s latest robot vacuum joins our recommended list. Our tests showed that it was able to pick up all of the test items, including pet fur and cereal, although it fell short of perfection by collecting just about 97% of the kitty litter.

To top it all off, the Wyze app is a breeze to use. Furthermore, it has practical extras like a location-based trigger. We think the Wyze Robot Vacuum is a better buy for the money than the similarly priced Eufy G30 Edge. Reason being, you can create separate spaces and off-limits areas.

  • Very fast mapping
  • Excellent on bare floors
  • Strong overall cleaning performance

  • Room division could be better
  • Only saves one map

Our testing revealed that the Neato D9 has a very good cleaning performance, earning an overall score of 92.79. It was able to collect over 93% of the kitty litter from the carpet, making it more effective than both the Eufy RoboVac X8 Hybrid and the Neato D4. It’s fast and easy to use, so you can leave it running even when you’re at home. The centrally located trash can is another nice touch, as it makes cleaning the robot a breeze.

The app’s speed is our only real gripe with it. While the unit itself is simple to set up, the app’s floor plan makes it tough to mark out zones and makes it impossible to distinguish between rooms; as a result, you may find yourself sending the robot on multiple trips to clean the same space. This forces you to choose between cleaning the entire house at once or focusing on a specific area at a time, neither of which is ideal. The biggest flaw of this layout is that it has that. This is an excellent robot vacuum to choose if you don’t need it to clean specific rooms.

  • Strong cleaning performance
  • Fast mapping
  • Attractive design

  • Can only clean one zone at a time
  • Clunky map divisions

The Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra is an eye-catching addition to any residence. The charging dock for this intelligent hybrid robot vacuum is a massive 19.4 by 16.5 inches and features an array of lights, music, and animations to keep it charged and ready to go. It’s safe to assume you’ll need some room to house this beastly investment. The large charging base has two water tanks—one for clean water and one for dirty water—and the expected self-emptying capabilities (it can hold up to 7 weeks’ worth of dust). This setup is pretty convenient because it allows the machine to clean its own mop cloth as necessary. After the robot has docked, it will apply clean water and a little bristle brush will scrub the fabric while the old water is drained. If you despise having to take out the cleaning cloth and wash it after each use, this is a great feature for you.

The real question is, how well does this robot vacuum work? Overall, it received a score of 91.26 on the cleanliness scale, making it a strong contender. It did exceptionally well while collecting kitty litter and almost as well when scooping up Cheerios (95.73 on average). While it had an impressive streak until it came to picking up dog hair from the floor, at which point it dropped to 58%. That’s the worst rating we’ve seen in comparison to other models in its class; the Roomba j7+ comes closest, at 72.5%, but it’s still a significant difference. Given the eye-popping asking price of $1,399, more quality was anticipated. However, the technology and performance of the Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra are also amazing. Pet-free families who prioritize comfort over all else and can afford to pay full price for it would benefit from this.

  • Strong vacuum performance
  • Won’t accidentally mop most rugs
  • Dock cleans mop pad well

  • Very large dock
  • Struggles with pet hair on carpet

If you’re looking for a low-cost robot vacuum with self-cleaning capabilities, go no further than the iRobot Roomba i3+. The base automatically empties itself, so there’s no need to empty it out after each use. In all except one case (cat litter on carpet), the Roomba i3+ performed admirably. In light of its otherwise stellar performance, this was the only major weakness.

The Roomba i3+ may be programmed and integrated with other smart home devices via its mobile app, Alexa, and Google Assistant. However, the Roomba i3+ cannot be instructed to map specific rooms, unlike the more expensive Roomba i7+ and s9+. Even so, we were impressed by its overall functionality.

  • Self-emptying base great for those with allergies
  • Excellent hardwood performance
  • Auto-detects dirtier areas

  • Poor kitty litter pickup on carpet
  • Lacks smart mapping
  • Very loud Clean Base

9. ILIFE V5s Pro, 2-in-1 Robot Vacuum and Mop

The iLife V5s Pro, the company’s second-best robot vacuum under $200, picked up nearly as much pet hair, Cheerios, and kitty litter as the V3s Pro, making it a strong contender for the top spot. The V5s Pro’s distinctive feature is its enhanced mopping capabilities. Though a vacuum and mop in one may sound like a fantastic concept, our in-home testing revealed that the V5s Pro was not particularly successful at mopping.

The V5s Pro, like many low-priced robot vacuum cleaners, doesn’t have an app for smartphones and isn’t compatible with smart homes or virtual assistants like Amazon’s Alexa or Google Home. Furthermore, it is even slower than the iLife V3s Pro, another of our evaluated robot vacuums, making it one of the slowest we’ve tested. It took it around 100 minutes to complete the course we set up for it. However, it is a highly efficient and cheap robot vacuum for the price.

  • Inexpensive
  • Quiet
  • Excellent cleaner

  • Lackluster mopping feature
  • Some debris not suctioned completely into dustbin

The Eufy Robovac G30 Edge robot vacuum is an excellent cleaner that won’t break the bank. It moved so quietly through our rooms in a very orderly fashion that we hardly noticed it as it went from one to the next. Despite being less efficient than the products that topped our list, it nonetheless collected 88.9 percent of the trash that was placed in front of it. Depending on the type of flooring you have, you may want to keep in mind that it performs significantly better on hard floors (94.35%) than carpets (83.52%).

The G30 Edge’s redesigned app made it more simpler to use than earlier Eufy robot vacuums. Even if the G30 Edge makes a map of your house, you can’t tell it to avoid certain areas or skip cleaning certain rooms.

  • Quiet
  • Easily fits under furniture
  • Lots of options and info in app

  • So-so carpet performance
  • Limited mapping capabilities

Buying Guide: What to Consider When Choose a Robot Vacuum

a) Self-emptying

Only higher-end variants have this function. The robot vacuum will “self-empty” when the dustbin is full by returning to its charging dock. Once this larger container is filled, it is brought to the dock until emptied. People with allergies will benefit greatly from the decreased frequency with which dust is released into the air by self-emptying models.

b) Wi-Fi connectivity

A smartphone connection is standard on most robot vacuums, but not on all. You can monitor and adjust your robot vacuum’s settings from your smartphone, and some models even include remote control.

c) Hybrid models

Combined vacuum-mop machines are available. The Roborock S7 is an exception to the rule, as its performance is on par with that of dedicated machines.

d) Mapping

Using sensors, some robot vacuums can create a map of your home and learn to navigate around obstacles like stairs. If your robot vacuum has Wi-Fi, it can download a map to your phone and use it to plot the most efficient cleaning route.

e) No-go zones

Some mapping utilities also let you designate “no-go zones” around things like your pet’s food bowls or a pricey area rug, in case you wish to keep them out of harm’s way.

f) Targeted rooms

Some allow you to establish targeted rooms, much like no-clean zones, for when you only need to clean a certain area.

g) Multiple floors

If you live on more than one story, you may find it helpful because mapping can sometimes extend to include all of your floors.

h) Scheduling

This is a standard function for robotic vacuum cleaners. By connecting with your smartphone, you can schedule when you want it to clean, be it daily, weekly or when you’re not at home.

i) Remote control

Some entry level robot vacuum cleaners come with a remote control rather than Wi-Fi connectivity. It doesn’t provide you as many options, but you can still control it hands-free with this.

j) Battery life

Battery life is vital to consider. Models that include a docking station can recharge themselves in the downtime between workouts. However, if the model you’re looking at needs to be manually plugged in, you can come home to a half-finished project.

k) Dust capacity

The sooner your trash can fills up, the smaller it should be. To be safe, go for at least 400 ml unless it empties itself. In contrast to the bagless dustbins seen on most robot vacuums, self-emptying models typically include vacuum bags in the charging base. Examine our e-book for further data on bagged and bagless vacuum cleaners.

i) How do robot vacuums work?

Robot vacuum cleaners are built to automatically navigate your home and clean your floors so you don’t have to. They’re flexible enough to clean whenever you want, on any schedule, and even while you’re away from the house. The robot is normally docked in order to recharge its batteries. Some of the more expensive types of these robot vacuums have docking stations that can also clear the robot’s trash when it becomes full.

ii) How long do robot vacuums last?

Robot vacuum cleaners are sophisticated machines that feature more electronics, software, and moving parts than traditional vacuum cleaners. However, with proper care and the occasional investment in new batteries, brushes, and filters, these devices have a useful lifespan comparable to that of more conventional vacuum cleaners. Hopefully, this means it will last for a long time.

It’s important to remember that most robots come with a one-year limited warranty that covers both components and labor from the manufacturer. Examples include the robots made by IRobot, Neato, and Samsung.

iii) How well do robot vacuums work?

Many factors affect how successfully a robot vacuum can clean your home. Robots can’t move on a floor with too many impediments, such as wires, charging cords, toys, shoes, and clothing. A robot’s performance will improve as clutter decreases. While most robot vacuums may be used on hard floors, some models perform better on tile, hardwood, and other carpet types.
